Hey guys, bill here. I don’t know about you but lately I have been seeing lots of stories about Animals being more intelligent than we give them credit for.
From woodpeckers that use sticks as tools to rats that can count, there seems to be more awareness of animal smarts these days, but the video that really rocked my world on the subject was this one.
It was shot by a German tourist in Antarctica. And it shows how killer whales are adapting to global climate change intelligently.
Killer whales have always hunted and eaten seals. But as ocean temperatures rise and ice breaks up into small pieces, it gives seals lots of platforms to hang out on to escape killer whales.
So the whales have come up to their own solution to this. And scientists like to call it wave washing. It’s amazing – check it out.
The whales get together in a group, and swim at the iceberg in formation. This creates a wave that can knock the seal off the ice.
I mean, i feel sorry for the seal, but you have to admit, those whales are no dummies.
As the video rolls on we see the seal jump back on top of the ice and escape the whales. This happens at least a half dozen times.
Now you might think the whale’s strategy isn’t so smart after all… but when you take a closer look you realize there is something else going on here.
If you watch closely, this whale back here actually gives a signal to the other whales to start to move forward. But as they do – and I’m going to stop the video here – we see there is a baby whale mixed in with the group.
According to a whale expert what we are watching is “hunting school”
EXPERT: It’s not that the whales are bad at catching the seal because they are trying to train that baby how to hunt. Its all about learning!
And that my friends brings me to the question of the day. Do you think animals are smarter than we think they are? Or are we humans the only species with smarts. . Leave me your answer in the comment section…. below!
