Update: Testing from the state public health lab in Rocky Hill came back Tuesday afternoon. The fox tested positive for rabies, according to the East Windsor Police Department. Police also say 5 people were attacked by the fox. It was first reported that 4 people were bit.
In less than 24 hours, Danielle Bopko of New York City had her fill of surprises after her boyfriend proposed to her, then an animal attacked her outside her family’s home on Mill Street in East Windsor.
“It’s a weekend to remember, haha,” said Bopko, smiling on Monday afternoon.
Monday morning was a different story.
“The second I opened the door, I felt something bite on my leg,” she said. “I realized it’s not a cat. It was just big and black and it was latched on and I kicked it into the wall. It was a fox.”
Bopko had been planning on a celebratory breakfast, but instead had to go to the hospital.
“Once it ended, I was crying. I was upset,” she said.
The fiesty fox also tussled with Bear, the Bopko family dog.
He and Bopko needed multiple shots.
“It was painful. I actually cried and felt embarrassed that I was crying over needles. The rest, I had about 10 between my arms — my arms, my thighs,” the 36-year-old said.
Police believe Bopko’s attacker is the same fox that officers killed at Broad Brook Elementary School about an hour and a half later.
It had bitten a second-grader on the playground, then wounded two staff members.
“The child was bitten several times,” said Det. Matt Carl of the East Windsor Police Department. “In the process of this attack, the teachers had noticed it and went over and grabbed the fox by the throat and attempted to hold it to the ground.”
The wild encounters were the talk around town on Monday afternoon.
“It’s scary because you know, we’re always out walking the dogs and there’s tons of people who walk their dogs along Mill Street,” said Cindy Herms, who lives in the area where the fox attacked.
“I’m sure they’ll take care of it though. Broad Brook is pretty good about that stuff. I hope, you know, I don’t want the kids to be scared,” said Todd Barnett, who was picking up his nephew from the school.
Police said all four fox attack victims were taken to the hospital.
The fox is undergoing testing for rabies.
Meanwhile, Bopko and her fiance might just spend the rest of their Connecticut visit, armed.
“We were just out here with a golf club,” she said. “Coming out of the house. Just be safe this time, haha.”
