It was a scary scene in a quiet Grand Island neighborhood when police say a pit bull attacked a 7-year-old girl.
The 20-month-old dog had just given birth to her first litter of puppies 12 hours earlier.
First-time dog breeder Sade Troester said it happened when her daughter’s friend attempted to pet the mother who was nursing her puppies at the time.
“My son was sleeping, and my other son is a baby,” said Troester, who is hearing impaired and spoke with the help of a neighbor.
“I was getting ready to go check on the girls. A second after, I put my baby down.”
It was then that the dog lunged at the girl and 911 was called.
Troester surrendered Diamond and her puppies to the Humane Society, a good move, said Animal Control Officer April Liske-Clark.
“The owner of the dog did the right thing. Protecting her own kids and surrendering the animals.”
Troester says she doesn’t want to see the dog get put to sleep, but she also doesn’t feel comfortable letting her back in her home.
Officials say the 7-year-old needed immediate surgery after the attack.
