ENID, Okla. – Life is slowly returning to normal for a 10-year-old boy who was viciously mauled by pit bulls in Enid.

Bernie Molnar could need surgery for another two years, according to his mother.

It’s heartbreaking to watch Christina Dettling show us all the injuries her 5th grade son suffered while visiting family on December 27.

Two pit bulls squeezed through a neighboring fence and attacked Bernie while he was riding his brand new scooter.

He now has staples in the back of his head.

The dogs broke his right arm and chewed a hole in his cheek that he could breathe through.

The pit bulls also ripped off part of Bernie’s ear.

“The ambulance driver was actually carrying the part of his ear in her hand,” Dettling said.

“I was shocked, scared, anything bad,” Bernie said. “I’m having trouble remembering (the attack) right now.”

A neighbor, Patrick Prall, heard the blood-curdling screams, and slammed Bernie’s scooter on top of the dogs.

Initially, they didn’t let the boy go.

“They grabbed on my arm and shook it like it was a chew toy,” Bernie said.

The dogs were eventually put down by authorities – and they tested negative for rabies.

A small relief for Dettling, who knows how dangerous pit bulls can be.

One study shows 60 percent of fatal dog bites in the U.S. are from pit bulls.

“It’s very hard to see my son like this every day,” Dettling said, “knowing that he’s got to live with this for the rest of his life.”

When asked if those dogs would have given up if no one came to his rescue, Bernie replied “Nope, I don’t. Because they would not stop.”

Jordan Soucek, the dogs’ owner who has been convicted of assault and battery twice, now faces harboring dangerous dogs charges next month.

Bernie says he feels lucky to have survived.

He will also need counseling for that traumatic experience, his mother said.

You can donate to the family to help with endless medical bills.

They have two fundraisers this week, as well as a Go Fund Me page.
